The Robin Hood Pub
I love pubs. Pubs like the Clocktower in Ottawa,
the Woolloomooloo Bay and Philip’s Foote in Sydney,
Australia, or the Black Swan
in Hammersmith, England. I love all types of pubs;
modern, traditional, English, Irish, Australian or Canadian. Finding a good pub
in a new city
is like finding a piece of home, a warm welcoming place to help you settle in
to your new environment.
After many false starts of going to pubs that didn’t suit us,
we finally found our niche pub here in Bangkok;
the Robin Hood Pub, at Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 or if travelling by the BTS, at Phrom
Phong Station (exit 5).
It is a traditional English Pub, with a wooden bar, wooden
tables and chairs, and dimly lit. There are huge TV screens throughout the pub,
showing different sports from around the world; Rugby Union, the Australian
Rugby League competition, soccer, surfing, golf and motor sports to name a few.
There is no sound from the TVs, all you can hear is some really great music, featuring
artists like the Doors, Thompson Twins, INXS, Adele—don’t worry, it is not so
loud that you can’t have a decent conversation.
The clientele are mostly older than the people in other pubs
in Bangkok.
There are locals as well as foreigners. There are more expat women in this pub
than I have seen in all the other pubs in Bangkok combined, and I reckon this
is because this is the only pub where the staff treats men and women with the
same level of respect and service ( which I am sure all women know what I
mean!).
The menu is quite extensive, with tapas, snacks, and a great
selection of pies, pizzas, salads and Thai meals. The fish and chips are as
good as any you would get at the pubs at the Byward Market in Ottawa. My favourite meal is the lamb doner
kebab with thick cut English chips, a bit spicy but delish!. Sundays are good
for the whole family as they have a roast available from about midday. There is
a breakfast menu until 3.00 pm every day of the week.
Happy hour is every day from 4-7 pm, with pints of selected
beers at 80/90 baht. There are plenty of beers on tap, including Kilkenny,
Carlsberg, Hoegaarden, Guinness, Tiger and Chang.
I have taken all of my guests to Bangkok to the Robin Hood pub and all of them
have loved it.
I think that this pub
is a little air conditioned oasis in the middle of this
huge and hot city. There is nothing like a deliciously cold beer after a hard
day’s work or a hard day’s shopping.
Maybe we will see you there. Cheers!
